About BAI

The Indian Construction Sector is the second largest employer after agriculture and is represented by Builders’ Association of India (BAI). BAI is an all India organization established in 1941, with its headquarters in Mumbai. The first BAI centre was started in Pune, primarily with the encouragement given by Brigadier Jackson of Military Engineering service. Today has more than 220 centres spread over the length and breadth of India with 40,000 direct members and 2,00,00 indirect members through the various Regional Associations affiliated to it. BAI is represented on various small, medium and large Government organization as an apex body and construction nodal agencies in the country and abroad.

BAI represents construction companies, builders, contractors, architects, designers, material and machinery manufacturers and dealers and consultants and has grown with both National and International influence.

BAI members are involved in construction of Roads, Railways, Tunnels, Ports, Bridges, Airports, Residential& Commercial Real Estate, etc. in India and abroad also.

BAI has very laudable aims and objectives. Its activities include conducting training programs for workers, representing and obtaining relief for the problems faced by the members and to hold exhibitions and organize conferences to showcase the industry and innovative technologies.

BAI is represented in IFAWPCA – International Federation of Asian & Western Pacific Contractors’ Association, a 50 year old organisation. Its aims and objectives are reconstruction of Asia and West Pacific RIM countries, cementing bonds of friendship, international cooperation through construction research, construction of better society towards new era and construction for global prosperity. It is also associated with International funding Institutions like World Bank, Asian Development Board and World Trade Organisations.

Apart from India, other member countries of IFAWPCA are Bangladesh, Cambodia Bhutan, Korea, Nepal, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Maldives, Malaysia, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Japan, Philippine, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.

BAI VISION

⦁ To promote and foster feelings of brotherhood, unity, co-operation, mutual trust and to eliminate unhealthy competition amongst the contractors fraternity.

⦁ To build public confidence in the construction industry by advocating ethics in the business through transparency and accountability.

⦁ To establish healthy and cordial relationship between the client, the contractor and the end-users, so that all construction projects are completed without any time or cost over-runs.

⦁ To interact with Government bodies like State Public Works Departments and the Central Public Works Department to modernize methods and specifications of works towards ensuring suitable work ethics in the Industry and standardizing tender procedures. Contracts awarded on the basis of such standardization will ensure uniformity in execution of construction jobs.

⦁ To achieve highest standards of efficiency and quality by adopting methodology which could be derivedfrom both Indian and International Standards with a view to making the construction sector competitive in domestic as well as international markets.

⦁ To ensure that contractors adopt methods which are environment-friendly like use of pre-engineered and pre-manufactured products, seeking inter-alia tax concessions on the same from the Government.

⦁ To not only regulate safety procedures and issue guidelines for minimizing loss of life or property at construction sites but also to enhance welfare of workers.

⦁ To develop linkages with other industry and Trade Associations, Chambers of Commerce, Federations etc. to enhance the value of its services to members. It shall network with international bodies and gain global presence for its members.

⦁ To regard workers and technicians as the key resource for construction industry. It shall support andestablish training institutions to train workers and technicians.

In its 85 years of existence, BAI has been looking after the needs of the industry, by making positive headway in tackling issues and taking concrete steps like :

⦁ Convincing the Central Government and various State Governments to introduce Price Variation Clause (Escalation Clause) in their respective contract documents.

⦁ Organising All India Builders’ Convention and Exhibition, which is a large gathering of members of civil engineering discipline including construction fraternity. These events are a focal point for exchange of ideas and transaction of business. BAI through All India Convention and Exhibition, brings about a sense of brotherhood amongst them. Till now twenty Seven Conventions have been organised.
